The French Way of St. James is considered one of the major routes to Compostela. It has gone via Pamplona since at least the 10th century, crossing the Pyrenees via San Juan de Pie de Puerto and Roncesvalles.
What is curious is that the rise of pilgrimages has gradually led to the figure of the ‘false pilgrim’, a crook or criminal who takes advantage of the movement of pilgrims to get up to no good.
